Helpful Resources for CTOs in New Zealand

Introduction

A range of resources is available to support tech leaders in New Zealand.

It’s taken me almost five years to find many of these, usually discovering them via word-of-mouth or searching on platforms such as Meetup, and I know there are resources I still need to uncover.

When I meet CTOs, they are rarely aware of all or even most of these—it's not their fault. These resources were not easy to find, so I figured it would be helpful to note them down in one place.

Resources

Meetups

Auckland Software and Product Leaders is a meetup with 50-100 attendees. It features a guest speaker, drinks, pizza, and networking before and after.

Tech Leaders Collective offers a variety of meetup formats with a focus on hands-on practice and connecting peers.

Tech Leader Chats - features a guest speaker or discussion topic and then breakout discussions in smaller groups that follow. The breakout discussions are worth sticking around to learn from your peers.

Tech Leader’s Support Network—I keep meeting tech leaders who could use more support and connections with peers, so I’ve started organising these small gatherings.

Migrants in Tech - a welcoming group that has made many a newcomer to New Zealand feel at home.

Coaching and Mentorship

Tech Waka Mentorship Programme. This programme commenced recently and offers the chance to be mentored by top leaders in NZ tech.

Gareth Cronin coachees can benefit from Gareth’s global experience and his range of experience working with boards and executive teams in large organisations. From leading large teams to writing the first lines of code for a startup, Gareth can address a range of contexts.

Noah Cantor is an experienced technology leader and CTO Coach (and also my co-host on CTO Life Line) who has worked in both small and large organisations and everything in between.

Online

Regular online meetups

Deva CTO Gatherings is an online community based out of Australia, which I discovered has many NZ participants. There are small online meetups amongst peers that lead to great connections and conversations.

Slack groups

Tech Leadership Aotearoa is a really useful Slack group for tech leaders.

DevOps NZ is for the DevOps community here in New Zealand.

Product Aotearoa is a national community and group of Product-focused meetups and other events.

Multitudes Tech Leadership community is a diverse group of leaders in technology with regular curated talks and other content.

Livestreams & Podcasts

CTO Life Line, the livestream hosted by Noah Cantor and me, is dedicated to helping CTOs move from surviving to thriving.

Tech Waka Podcast is a regular podcast with interviews with tech leaders hosted by Jakub Jurkiewicz.
